Dress code and training etiquette for members
For training purposes during regular GI 🥋 classes, students are required to wear a standard jiu jitsu GI (uniform) and belt that fits their body-type well, for both comfort and safety. Students must wear a close-fitting rash guard or t-shirt under the gi; the rash guard or t-shirt should extend approximately 2-4 inches below the drawstring/waistband of the gi pants. Close-fitting means a top that does not easily slide up during training to expose the torso. Please do not wear any other type of top: they are not appropriate for jiu jitsu training. The belt should always be properly tied during line up, bow out, and technical instruction phase of class.
For NO GI classes, students may wear gi pants, grappling or board shorts, and a close-fitting rash guard or t-shirt that extends approximately 2-4 inches below the drawstring of gi pants or waistband of shorts. Close-fitting means a top that does not easily slide up to expose the torso during training. Please do not wear any other type of top: they are not appropriate for jiu jitsu training. The shorts must not have open pockets, and must be at least mid-thigh in length. Students should also consider wearing compression shorts underneath their grappling shorts. Female students may choose to wear elastic, grappling tights (aka “spats”) instead of pants or shorts. Male students may also do so, but must wear grappling shorts over the spats.
Please remember to check in on the iPad when you arrive for class.
No shoes on the mat.
Mouthguards are highly recommend for adults, youth, and teens. Especially during live sparring (rolling).
ALL training gear and clothing must be washed after each training session: unpleasant odors and skin infections are not appreciated by anyone so please be conscientious about this.
Students must have clean hands and feet, keep fingernails/toenails short, and be free of body odor prior to stepping on the mat. This means using clippers, deodorant, and/or bathing before class if required.
Any jewelry should be removed or taped before training. Silicone wedding bands may be worn on the mat. Watches must be removed.
Long hair should be braided or otherwise properly confined before class begins.
No bare feet in the restrooms, hallways, or lobby: please use flip flops, shoes, or socks.
Please remember to bow on and off the mat.
Please do not attend class if you have been drinking alcohol or smoking; the associated odors are not acceptable in a jiu jitsu training environment.
Black belt instructors are referred to as “Professor”. Non-black belt instructors should be referred to as “Coach”.
If you create a mess anywhere in the academy, please clean it up. If you require assistance, ask an instructor.
Always treat your training partners, and yourself, with respect: this means alway be in control of your actions when training. This is especially true during live rolling. Be ready to train with vigor and enthusiasm!
